Cosmetic dentistry is any form of dentistry that improves the look of your teeth and smile. Cosmetic dentistry can comprise procedures such as a dental filling, a dental crown, dental veneers, or voluntary procedures, such as orthodontics to align teeth or teeth whitening to whiten teeth. Often, cosmetic dentistry benefits both aesthetics and oral health.
Types of Cosmetic Dentistry
Dental Bonding- Dental bonding can be used to fix cavities, as well as add to the shape and size of the front teeth for cosmetic purposes. Bonded fillings are an alternative to veneers; they don’t last as long and need to be touched up or replaced more frequently, but are less expensive.
Dental Veneers- Dental veneers are thin shell-like tooth-shaped coverings that get bonded to the front of a tooth. Often they are used across the top front teeth to improve the appearance by changing the size, shape and colour of the teeth. While they cost more than dental bonding, you can expect much better longevity out of this option.
Dental Crowns- Dental crowns are full or all surface tooth coverings that bond permanently over the top of a prepared tooth. Dental crowns can be used to reduce the risk of fracture and breakage of vulnerable teeth, as well as improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured teeth.
Orthodontics- Traditional metal braces, or aligner tray treatment such as Invisalign, are used to align teeth to get rid of crowding, rotations and bite issues. Orthodontics improve the appearance of the teeth as well as improve the bite and function.
Teeth Whitening- There are several options available for teeth whitening. In-office whitening uses a special UV light to speed up the action of the whitening agent. Take-home trays are custom fitted trays filled with a whitening agent that you wear daily for a couple of weeks. Over-the-counter whitening strips are also available in a much lower concentration when compared to dental office whitening options. The effectiveness of the whitening is based on the method used. In-office whitening is the most common method of teeth whitening.
Dental Implants- Dental implants are used to replace a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. It is the best option for comfort, aesthetic and function compared with other tooth replacement options such as a dental bridge or dentures.
Often, there will be several cosmetic treatment options for a specific concern. For example, a discoloured front tooth can be improved through the use of a dental veneer, dental crown or teeth whitening. It is essential to discuss your concerns or wants with your dentist so the appropriate treatment options can be provided.
